Suzanne Lummis: Poet, Teacher, Writer, Editor, Impresario
Best of 2015: Book Critic David L. Ulin’s top 10 books of 2015
“Wide Awake: Poets of Los Angeles and Beyond” edited by Suzanne Lummis (Beyond Baroque Books/Pacific Coast Poetry Series: 326 pp., $18): Lummis has been on the Los Angeles poetry scene since before there was a Los Angeles poetry scene, and in this magnificent anthology, she gathers the work of more than 100 poets (Wanda Coleman, Luis J. Rodriguez, Eloise Klein Healy, Douglas Kearney) to reveal the depths and power of the city’s poetic sensibility.
Suzanne Lummis’s Open 24 Hours is a glittering, mordant, ravishingly clever book. It bristles with energy and biting wit and is as much about the life of writing as it is about the shifting lives of those who live just on the edge of L.A. It also ranges far afield into the worlds of the internet, the soul, and a man adrift in a gondola suspended by balloons. No one who buys Open 24 Hours is going to put this book down—breathless ride though it may be. I found myself eagerly turning the pages and laughing out loud: see the poem “Too.”
